EDP Support in Port Affairs

EDP Support in Maintenance and Repair Management

Inspections and investigations are a prerequisite for effective maintenance strategies and damage prevention. Often missing, however, is a tool, which allows coherent and quick information on the actual situation of material properties. A Port Maintenance System is filling the gap between daily enquiries on inventory and the specification of one or more different maintenance strategies.

Outline of Contents
Topics of this seminar can be summarized as follows:
Working hours control
Rate of availability calculation
Maintenance planning
Repair planning
Store – keeping admi-nistration system
Workshop organisation
Preventive maintenance
Equipment data base
Inventory recording
Condition rating
Capacity rating
Technical priority rating

Methodology
The example of existing systems like POLA developed by the Danish State Railways (DSB), allows an insight in modern maintenance and administration during the relevant lectures.

Tagrget group
Port Mechanical Engineers and Junior Port Managers

Where to start?

EDP Support in Port Administration

Modern port administration today depend to a great extend on EDP support, in data exchange and all statistics. Computer applications for port administration are being presented and discussed. The applicability on the situation in different ports will be analyzed, too.

Outline of Contents
EDP systems and applications for the following work fields will be presented:
Port organisation
VTS Vessel Traffic System
Marine Services
Port Planning and Construction
Navigational Aids Management
Disaster management

Methodology
A combination of theoretical introduction into state-of-the-art software solutions and visits to relevant parties involved.

Tagrget group
Employees of port authorities, nautical supervising bodies and other related institutions.

EDP Support in Port Financial Management

This seminar will give an overview on various state-of –art software in accounting. As a major example we present the Universal Tariffing and Analysis System (UTA) developed by a major port operator in the Hamburg Port because of the system's user friendliness. The advantages of such a system will be pointed out during the lecture, namely:
Transparency of costs and turnover per order
Reduction in administrative expenditure
Greater flexibility in invoicing.

Outline of Contents
In the case of UTA the basis for tariffing and invoicing is the existing customers' contracts. These data, which only need to be fed into the system once, generate all invoices and statistics - and without major effort. Further topics of this seminar are:
Costing and accounting
Balance sheets, cash flow, profit / loss calculation
Analysis of profitability, company accounts, capital investment
Budgeting
Control of divisional performance
Capital management
Inter divisional transfer pricing

Methodology
System applications and simulation of standard procedures

EDP Support in Port and Terminal Operations

Modern container terminal management and operations today depend to a great extend on EDP support, especially in port and terminal operations. Deep knowledge in multi-mode computer applications for container terminal operations will be transferred.

Outline of Contents
After an introduction into the basic terminology and standard software the impact of edp on port and terminal operations will be discussed. Further topics are:
Computer networking
Standards and possibilities of international data exchange
Simplification of documentation
Paperless port
Terminal operation control
Radio data communication
Vessel stowage planning
Container control in the hinterland
External data exchange
Management information system

Methodology
The design and interpretation of various edp related models of container yard management will be presented by lectures and during site visits.
